The province of New Brunswick issued a statement to the media this week saying “the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has been working on updates to Policy 311 to address cellphone use in schools in a more stringent way” and that “The department will be bringing forward these modifications in the coming weeks.” Meanwhile…New Brunswick’s former education minister says his ‘one big regret’ was not banning cellphones in school. Dominic Cardy said a social media post last week that “I thought we needed to teach students to handle these incredible tools. I was wrong. They’re a gift and a threat to all of us but, coupled [with a] decline in discipline, they’re destroying classrooms.” https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/cellphones-classroom-ban-dominic-cardy-1.7189307

The province’s francophone school districts are refusing to remove their gender identity policies from their websites. The policies are at odds with the provincial government’s controversial policy 713, which requires students under 16 to get parental consent to use different names and pronouns at school. They remain posted on the websites for Francophone South, Francophone Northwest and Francophone Northeast districts, despite requests from the provincial government to take them down. The policies say students in Grade 6 and above can choose the names and pronouns they want used at school, and younger students can do the same, depending on their age and maturity. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development says it will partner with the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick to provide training to 400 early childhood educators over the next four years. Beginning this fall, 100 educators in the anglophone sector will be invited to participate in a training program that will include coaching and mentoring so that early childhood educators can feel confident about their skills. The Province is reminding NBers that the 2024 wildfire season is underway. Officials are already warning about how dry it is in New Brunswick…Last year we had double our average wildfire activity and they warn it could get worse this year. In 2023 New Brunswick mobilized fire teams 23 times and also sent 236 firefighting personnel to five other provinces and one territory to assist with the worst wildfire season in Canadian history. You can check burn conditions daily by calling 1-866-458-8080 or visiting http://gnb.ca/FireWatch. We can all do our part to keep our firefighters and communities safe. Help us prevent and protect against wildfires this season.

The @Canes and @Avalanche punched their tickets into the Second Round, while the @MapleLeafs and @PredsNHL each picked up 2-1 wins to force Game 6s back at home.#NHLStats: https://t.co/vn8OQ5wELJ pic.twitter.com/r4PaYS26LG

Stanley Cup Playoffs: The Toronto Maple Leafs stay alive! The Leafs beat the Bruins 2-1 in overtime last night to force a game 6 in that series. Unfortunately the Winnipeg Jets can’t say the same thing…the Jets lost yo Colorado and lose that series four games to one. Vancouver lost 2-1 to Nashville…the Canucks still lead that series 3-2. Carolina moves on to the second round with a 6-3 win over the Islanders.
