The City of Moncton is looking at possible traffic calming measures at an intersection in the north end of the city where a youngster was hit by a vehicle last week. The child was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The accident happened at the intersection of Twin Oaks & Falcon Drive as the student was going to Northrop Frye School, one of four schools in the north end. Traffic in that area has been an issue for a while. By the way…police say that the vehicle driver involved in that crash last week will not be charged. The 2024 wildfire season is underway. Last year Canada experienced the worst wildfire season on record, with New Brunswick mobilizing teams 23 times and sending 236 firefighting personnel to five provinces and one territory to assist.

The province’s environment minister says officials are expecting a “horrific” wildfire season that is expected to rival last year’s. Mike Holland says the province’s 10-year average is 246 fires per year, with 4.5 square kilometres of forested area burned – a figure that nearly doubled last year. Wildfire prevention officer Roger Collet says the province has 143 trained firefighters and eight aircraft at its disposal to battle forest fires this season. The federal natural resources minister has said a combination of above-average temperatures and limited rain and snow have left extremely dry conditions across much of the country. The provincial government says it has accepted eight recommendations to improve the anglophone education sector. The recommendations were put forth by a committee made up of teachers, students, district education councils and First Nations formed in April last year. A news release says the committee also got feedback from more than three thousand New Brunswickers between May and September of last year on ways to improve the anglophone sector. The recommendations include encouraging students from kindergarten to Grade 8 to get outside for 30 minutes of physical activity every day and improving retention and recruitment of qualified teachers and specialized health-service professionals in education. Chrystia Freeland’s fourth budget delivers a big-ticket housing program for millennials and Generation Z voters — a multi-billion dollar commitment to be paid for in part with a tax hike on the rich and corporate Canada.

The Federal Government has introduced the latest federal budget, with 535-billion-dollars in spending and a 39.8-billion-dollar deficit. That compares to projected spending of 497.5-billion and a deficit of 40-billion dollars last year. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says much of the spending plan is aimed at creating generational fairness for younger Canadians. She says it’s harder for younger Canadians to establish themselves right now, and that’s unhealthy for the country. The government plans to spend 2-point-6 billion on measures to ease the cost of education and help create jobs. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says it marks the ninth deficit for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government. Poilievre says his party will not support the federal budget — while N-D-P leader Jagmeet Singh (JUG’-meet) says he hasn’t yet decided his party’s next move.
Protect your loved ones from Grandparent Scams by talking about it. Scammers impersonate family members in distress or claim to be police officers in order to manipulate you. Report scams at https://t.co/u1P8qRwlT3. pic.twitter.com/mFDi2P929Q

The NB RCMP say that they continue to receive reports of the financial fraud scheme that is sometimes referred to as “the grandparents scam”. Victims get a phone call from a person claiming to be a police officer who has one of the victim’s family members in custody. The scammers demand a large sum of money to have the family member released from jail. This type of scam often targets senior citizens that have limited access to the internet or who don’t use social media, and preys on the fear of a loved one being hurt or in trouble. You can help your family members by sharing the tips and information provided. in the news release below. If you receive one of these calls, hang up the phone immediately, and report the call to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If you have been a victim of fraud, also contact your local police and your financial institution. More: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/news/2024/rcmp-warning-public-financial-fraud-phone-scheme
