N.B. plans to dissolve education council https://t.co/RPW7zuHWzZ
— CTV Atlantic (@CTVAtlantic) May 2, 2024
The Anglophone East District Education Council rejected Education Minister Bill Hogan’s deadline yesterday to stop spending funds from its budget on legal action against the province regarding its changes to Policy 713. The Education Minister issued a statement about an hour after his deadline saying the DEC had left him “no options but to commence the process for dissolution” of the council. So what happens now??? That’s where it all gets a bit complicated … The government has to go to court to argue that they have grounds to disband the council…and the DEC says they’re protected by the education act. The DEC also filed a statement of claim in court this week saying that the government’s changes to Policy 713 are discriminatory against gender diverse youth…because the policy explicitly says that it doesn’t apply to “nicknames” of CISgender students. It says that the province is singling out a vulnerable group and making them a target for different treatment. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/education-council-rejects-minister-ultimatim-policy-713-nb-1.7192344
An ethics experts says that it’s “highly likely” that the province’s plan to force people with severe addiction issues into treatment will cause more harm than good. The regional director of ethics services for the Horizon Health Network, Timothy Christie, says he conducted an analysis of the proposed Compassionate Intervention Act and found “huge problems” related to Charter violations and also evidence-based medicine. The Town of Riverview is holding a public information session tomorrow about protecting your property from possible wildfires. The information session, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the fire hall on Pinewood, will also include representatives from the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development. FYI: New Brunswick’s forest fire website says 112 fires have been reported across the province so far this year, compared to 67 at the same point last year. The 10-year average is 53 fires.

One of the region’s top attractions is expanding it’s programming following a record year last season! Le Pays de la Sagouine organizers give most of the credit for the uptick in attendance last year to the wildly popular debut of the “Akadi Lumina” light and sound night walk that crowds flocked to last year The Bouctouche attraction says that they were hoping for 18,000 vistors last year for that attraction…and they had more than 41,000! Organizers say that Akadi Lumina returns for a new season on May 17th, and the Summer season of Le Pays de la Sagouine begins on June 23rd. More info: https://sagouine.com/en/.
