New Brunswick’s Public Safety Minister says he’s disappointed that the police are no longer going to investigate routine fuel thefts from gas stations in the province. Kris Austin said he understands that police need to prioritize calls and that some reported crimes don’t have witnesses…but said in a statement issued Friday that he’s “disappointed that local police and RCMP would take this approach and will be following up with them for further discussion.” Police say that fuel thefts will be investigated if they involve violence or property damage. The CBC reports that police are currently lobbying the province to enact legislation to require retailers to have pre-pay or pay at the pump systems. Public Safety Minister Austin says the government won’t tell gas retailers what to do. More: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/new-brunswick-police-gas-theft-1.7185782

Europeans invited to visit New Brunswick’s capital – Saint John – and its largest city – also Saint John. https://t.co/YxhztR6H2c

Some European tour operators that met with New Brunswick officials last year are routinely mixing up basic facts in their advertisements! Some ads from the European operators suggest people visit shuttered attractions like the Martello Tower and the New Brunswick Museum. One operator erroneously called Saint John the province’s capital city, and another said it was the largest city in the province, which is also untrue. Moncton never even gets mentioned and one ad says Hopewell Rocks is at Fundy national Park. Both of the firms in question have signed contracts with New Brunswick Tourism Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace, who says she met with the companies during a trip to London and Paris last year.
New Brunswick has ranked first in a report on early childhood education released by the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. The report, released every three years, measures the quality of early learning and child-care systems in each province and territory by evaluating five categories: governance, funding, access, learning environments and accountability. https://www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/news/news_release.2024.04.0170.html
