The New Brunswick government has approved a disaster financial assistance program to help those who suffered property damage following storms last December and in February. The program is aimed at helping individuals, small businesses, not-for-profit organizations and local governments. On December 18th and 19th, heavy rain and strong winds elevated water levels along the New Brunswick coast, causing significant damage, and on February 28th and 29th, heavy rain resulted in significant flooding across southern New Brunswick. The government says the program is not a replacement for insurance and it only covers uninsurable losses of essential items, which is why camps, cottages, boats, cars, trailers and yard cleanups are not eligible. More info on the program and how to apply here: https://www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/news/news_release.2024.04.0171.html
An anonymous donor has given one million dollars to the Horizon Health Network to reduce wait times for MRI scans. Right now…the average wait time in the province for a non-emergency MRI is about 370 days, which is well above the national average. The authority plans to use the donation to hire four full-time technologists for two years, and pay for MRI training for eight employees. These measures will add about four-thousand MRI appointments each year. More: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/mri-wait-times-donation-1.7185935
Lane Reductions on Hillsborough Road start today between Old Coach Road and Harmony Drive until mid-July. The Town of Riverview says it will be replacing sections of curb and sidewalk, as well as resurfacing Hillsborough Road along that stretch. One lane of traffic in each direction will be open during construction. More: https://www.townofriverview.ca/news/lane-reduction-on-hillsborough-road-2.
The City of Moncton is currently in the midst of a construction boom, with a staggering 183 permits issued in the first quarter of the year, up to March 31st. The total permit value skyrocketed to $56.5 million, more than double compared to the same period in 2023, which saw a value of $22.5 million. Residential construction accounted for 37% of the total value of building permits, with 164 residential units valued at $21 million approved for construction. These residential options will help Moncton’s housing market, adding much-needed supply and inventory. Notable projects include a $15.9-million, 129-unit apartment building on McLaughlin Drive and a $2.6-million, 18-unit apartment building on Bavaria Lane.
We are completely unprepared for the level of disruption AI is about to unleash. It’s already started:
An AI-generated video of #PEI chef Michael Smith is being used to scam people’s credit card info, & Smith is angered by Facebook’s lack of response.https://t.co/fZ4E5pNKZs

A PEI chef and TV host is warning people about a fake video advertisement that features him offering hundreds of dollars worth of cookware for free – in return for credit card details. Chef Michael Smith says there is a “deepfake” video ad of him on Facebook asking people for their credit card info in exchange for a free cookware set worth 500 dollars. Smith says he’s angry that Facebook has not taken down the ad despite repeated requests for it to be removed from both him and the cookware company. (FYI: The term deepfake refers to the use of artificial intelligence to create video, images or audio that can realistically replicate someone’s voice, appearance or movement. )
