The New Brunswick Tourism Minister is defending an expensive trip to Europe that she and her deputy minister and staffers took last Fall. Tammy Scott Wallace told a legislature committee yesterday that visiting places like Buckingham Palace & the Palace of Versailles can help the tourism department learn “best practices” for site management here in our province. Wallace, and her Deputy Minister billed the taxpayers a combined $22,527 for an eight day trip to Europe last year. Close to 700 instructors at New Brunswick Community College could go on strike in the new school year over a contract dispute with the Province. The Telegraph Journal reports that the Conservative government rejected the framework of a deal presented by NBCC in January. Susie Proulx-Daigle, the president of the New Brunswick Union of Public Employees, says that instructors are paid 23 per cent less than their counterparts earn at Nova Scotia Community College, and warns that instructors could walk off the job in September without a new deal. The last contract shows that NBCC instructors earn between $56,108 and $82,342, depending on their education and seniority. More than 12,000 students attend the college’s six campuses in Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John, Saint Andrews, Miramichi and Woodstock. After almost two years as the interim head of the Horizon Health Network, Margaret Melanson has finally been named as president & CEO of the network. The network has been plagued by challenges in recent years – from understaffing to hospital bed shortages. Melanson says she’s prioritizing two areas she says are urgent…primary care access & seniors waiting in hospital for long-term care. Melanson says another key area has been recruitment and retention of hospital staff.

Canada’s National Radon Conference is being held here in Moncton starting today. The conference brings almost 200 researchers, public health officials, radon professionals, and many others to the city to discuss the latest in radon research and policy and try to raise awareness around the cancer-causing radioactive gas. Radon has been in the news a lot recently in the region, thanks to Angela Stief Lea’s story. A non-smoker, Angela was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer last Fall. Testing in her home in Havelock revealed very elevated levels of radon. Angela’s story was picked up by media across the country and led to hundreds of local homes being tested for radon. Sadly, Angela passed away last week, on April 18th.
Have you had your home tested for radon? There’s a very high incidence of radon in many parts of New Brunswick…have you had your home tested?
Health Canada urges all homeowners to test their home for radon to protect the health of their family. To find a list of test suppliers, head to TakeActiononRadon.ca.

The City of Dieppe says that Chartersville Road, between Amirault and Bahamas streets, will be completely closed to traffic on Wednesday, April 24. This closure is necessary in order to allow for work on the water and sewer system. Detour signs will be in place. It is to be noted that businesses will remain accessible. Motorists are encouraged to plan for longer travel times while the work is being carried out.
