An 18 year old Dieppe woman has been charged with trafficking girls. Saphira Bastien appeared in court on Friday and was charged with two counts of trafficking girls under the age of 18, and is also charged with making child pornography. The Times & Transcript reports that she allegedly exercised control over the movements of the girls for the purpose of facilitating their exploitation in Dieppe between April 9-14 in one charge and April 9-16 in the other. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing. A publication ban has been put in place to prevent the reporting of anything that would identify the victims in the case.

New Brunswick’s environment minister says he is resigning because he has political differences with the Progressive Conservative party. Gary Crossman says his personal and political beliefs “no longer align in many ways” with the direction of the party and its government. The Tory minister says he is resigning immediately from cabinet. He will step down from his duties as the member for the Hampton district in the coming days. Crossman was first elected in 2014, and he has served as environment minister since 2020.
N.B. public safety minister defends new jail after costs more than double to $66 million https://t.co/CfvN2L4TTq
— CTV Atlantic (@CTVAtlantic) April 21, 2024
The provincial government says cost estimates for the new jail in Grand Lake, have more than doubled to $66 million. When the jail was first announced in 2021, costs were predicted to be about $32 million. Public Safety Minister Kris Austin blames the cost estimate increase on inflation and said it was “the same kind of sticker shock you get when you go to the grocery store.” Liberal MLA Jacques LeBlanc called the new $66 million cost estimate “alarming,” and asked if the project would be “reconsidered” due to the higher estimate. Austin says the province needs the correctional centre and the project will still go ahead despite the inflated costs. More:
