A young person in Moncton was hit by a vehicle near a school in the city’s north end on Friday morning. A spokesperson said police responded to a call about a truck that hit a cyclist at about 7:50 a.m. Friday. He said fire and paramedics were already on scene and looking after the student, who was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. “It appears the student crossed the street without looking and was struck by the vehicle.” The Anglophone East School District said in a letter to families that a student from Northrop Frye School was accidentally struck by a vehicle while on a bicycle and taken to hospital by ambulance. The collision was in the area of Twin Oaks Drive and Falcon Drive. More: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/moncton-student-struck-by-truck-near-school-1.7172528

‘Unrepentant’ N.B. Tory worker who called for Higgs’s leadership review steps down https://t.co/sa99dSmqZp
— CTV Atlantic (@CTVAtlantic) April 14, 2024
A local PC party volunteer who spearheaded an unsuccessful effort to trigger a leadership review of Premier Blaine Higgs has resigned from his post. John Williston, who served as regional vice-president of the party for Westmorland Albert, outlined his decision in a letter last week. He accused the party of losing sight of long-held defining principles, but argued the primary failing comes from a lack of openness and accessibility within the ranks. Williston managed Natural Resources Minister Mike Holland’s campaign when he first ran for office in 2018, and former cabinet minister Daniel Allain’s first run in 2020.
Finance Minister Ernie Steeves says he’s not concerned about a slow uptake for the NB Workers Benefit. By the end of March less that 50,000 of the 250,000 NBers eligible for the one time, tax free, $300 payment, had applied. Steeves told a legislative committee last Thursday that New Brunswick residents are notorious for doing things last minute ..even going as far to say that “a Taylor Swift show might come to town, and the tickets might be sold at the last minute. That’s what happens in New Brunswick, for whatever reason” You can apply for the NB Workers Benefit until the end of June here: https://www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/corporate/promo/new-brunswick-workers-benefit.html
Economists say they’re expecting the federal government to raise taxes in Tuesday’s budget to help offset billions of dollars in new spending already promised in the pre-budget announcements that have been landing almost daily since the end of March. https://t.co/mXQhbm1t8Y
— CBC News (@CBCNews) April 14, 2024
The Federal Budget is released tomorrow by the liberal government…and experts think they’re going to raise taxes to pay for all of the promises they’ve been making. The slew of announcements, including billions of dollars for housing and national defence, raises a big question: How will the Liberals pay for it all? Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has promised the deficit won’t increase and ruled out raising taxes on the middle class. But there’s increasing suspicion that the new policies will be funded by new taxes on corporations and the wealthy.
