A New Brunswick coroner’s inquest has issued recommendations after looking into the 2022 emergency room death of 78 year old Darrell Mesheau. The inquest was told that Mesheau showed up at the Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton pale and short of breath, and was left to sit in the waiting room for nearly seven hours before he was found dead by staff. The inquest ended Tuesday with recommendations aimed at improving ER services with more staff and equipment to prevent deaths under similar circumstances. The jury recommended all stakeholders “collaborate and show ownership in the resolution of the bed-blockage issue”… and said that the backlog of Social Development patients awaiting long-term care contributes “significantly to the efficiency” of emergency room and hospital care in our province. Mesheau’s son traveled from California to witness the proceedings and was asked by reporters afterwards about it…He said…”It may be too late for my dad, but it’s not too late for other New Brunswickers,” he also said he’s an optimistic person but was asked whether he thinks the changes will be implemented, he said, “probably not.” He also says the family is still considering legal action. The NB RCMP say that they continue to receive reports of the financial fraud scheme that is sometimes referred to as “the grandparents scam”. Victims are receiving phone calls from an individual claiming to be a police officer who had one of the victim’s family members in custody, and then demanding a large sum of money to have the family member released from jail. This type of scam often targets senior citizens that have limited access to the internet or who don’t use social media, and preys on the fear of a loved one being hurt or in trouble. You can help your family members by sharing the tips and information provided. in the news release below. If you receive one of these calls, hang up the phone immediately, and report the call to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If you have been a victim of fraud, also contact your local police and your financial institution. More: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/news/2024/rcmp-warning-public-financial-fraud-phone-scheme
New Brunswick’s agriculture industry enjoyed a second straight year of record exports and farm cash receipts. The sector finished 2023 with more than $1.2 billion in farm cash receipts, up from the previous record of just over $1.1 billion set the year before. Agriculture and agri-food exports totalled $778.4 million in 2023, topping the previous record of $689 million from 2022. Some of the strongest growth in farm revenue included a $91 million increase in potato receipts and a $109 million increase in livestock receipts. The sector also experienced revenue growth from floriculture, grains, maple products, vegetables and eggs. Potatoes and potato products led agriculture and agri-food exports.
