Most New Brunswickers…and a TON of visitors collectively stopped and stared at the sky for a bit yesterday as the solar eclipse moved across the province. According to meteorologists, our province had some of the best weather along the eclipse route so we got really lucky there! The next total solar eclipse that will be viewable here in North America isn’t until 2045!

Two men from Rogersville are facing firearms charges after an incident in the community last week. On April 3rd, RCMP responded to a report of shots fired inside an apartment complex in Rogersville. Police arrested a 30-year-old man at the scene, a 21-year-old man was later arrested on route 126 in Rogersville without incident. No one was injured. 21-year-old Jacob Thibodeau, 30-year-old Mathieu LeBlanc, appeared in Miramichi Provincial Court on April 4 and were charged. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The New Brunswick government’s new bottle return system will pay consumers an extra $18 million on returns this year. The beverage industry will get $23 million more to pay for it.

New Brunswickers are getting bigger refunds as part of a new bottle return system that took effect April 1st — but hidden consumer fees to finance that new program are eating away at those refunds. The CBC reports that not-for-profit Encorp Atlantic manages bottle returns in the province, and has been promoting the new system by emphasizing that refunds paid to those who return beverage containers have doubled. However, to help finance those larger refunds, the provincial government is letting Encorp charge new container recycling fees that reduces the value of that enhanced refund.

The Feds have given New Brunswick a reprieve from some strict international student caps for the school year ahead. The federal government announced in January it was slashing by 35 per cent the number of undergraduate study permits it hands out across the country. New Brunswick officials complained to the Feds that the caps were too strict and that our post secondary institutions and businesses would suffer…and the Feds listened! The feds now say New Brunswick institutions can issue a total of 14,651 acceptance letters, up from an original figure of 9,300.

ICYMI: The Université de Moncton’s board of governors has approved a three-per-cent tuition increase for all students. The board met on the weekend to approve the school’s budget for the fiscal year that began April 1st. It forecasts a surplus of 1.5-million dollars. The board says an increase in international students in past years has brought in more money, but it’s not certain if that will continue after the federal government announced in January it was imposing a cap on international study permits.
