Opposition parties say premier Blaine Higgs lacks compassion because he responded to the recent deaths of two homeless people by invoking legislation that could force the unhoused into addiction treatment. Liberal Leader Susan Holt says Blaine Higgs’ comments at the legislature Tuesday failed to show empathy for the two people killed in a tent fire at an encampment in Saint John. Higgs said that some people “just don’t want to come off the street,” in response to an opposition question about how his government would prevent tent fires at encampments, and his government will table legislation to help people into shelters when their lives are in danger. In the fall, Public Safety Minister Kris Austin told the C-B-C that the government planned to table a bill that would give police the power to force people into drug rehabilitation in extreme cases.

Firefighters in Rexton returned to work yesterday afternoon after walking off the job last week. Rexton Volunteer Fire Acting Chief Warren Goodwin says firefighters met with members of the Fire Marshal’s office as well as the mayor and council from the municipality of Five Rivers Tuesday evening. Firefighters said the dispute was over budgetary issues and what they called a lack of respect and communication from the municipality. No one from Five Rivers has commented on the nature of the conflict.
Amendments introduced today will strengthen the regulatory framework for the sale of tobacco, smoking supplies, electronic cigarettes and vaping liquids. These changes aim to improve overall compliance and protect the health of young New Brunswickers. If you are looking to quit…
— Government of NB (@Gov_NB) March 26, 2024
The province wants to crack down on stores that don’t follow the rules for selling e-cigarettes and vape liquids. The government says many vape shops aren’t following rules that are aimed at preventing young people from vaping. Those include a ban on flavoured vape liquids and a licensing requirement for vape shops. Proposed amendments would allow inspectors to seize items, prevent the use of vending machines for such products, and require shops to request I-D from those who look 25 or younger.
