New Brunswick is projecting a $41 million surplus for the 2024-25 fiscal year in what one economist calls a “hold the line” budget.
What’s likely to get the most attention is health spending, which is up just $1.7 million from the latest spending projections for current fiscal.

The New Brunswick government tabled it’s 2024 budget yesterday in Frederiction…the top line stuff? No tax cuts…no tax increases…and the biggest health care budget in the province’s history…although it’s less than $2 million in new spending for health care. Finance Minister Ernie Steeves is projecting another small surplus for 2024-25 of just $41 million. This is the final budget before the provincial election later this year. New Brunswick’s Liberal leader says she thinks “New Brunswickers are going to feel sick” once they realize what the Progressive Conservative government’s latest budget means for the health system. Susan Holt says yesterday’s budget means there isn’t going to be any bold transformation of the health care system. She says the budget is just shifting existing spending around the system.
