NEW: New Brunswick’s child, youth and seniors’ advocate has issued a sweeping and scathing denunciation of how the provincial government runs social programs. https://t.co/DojsyuwQUB
— Jacques Poitras (@poitrasCBC) March 11, 2024
Kelly Lamrock, the child, youth and seniors’ advocate for New Brunswick, has issued a statement calling out the government for how badly they run social programs. Lamrock says the province’s social policy process is broken. It’s a 49 page report that doens’t just lay the situation at the feet of the current government, but traces the issues back three decades, over all the governments during that time, and blames the break down for problems in areas like health care, social development and education. He says it’s a “bureaucracy built for 1994 (trying) to solve the challenges of 2024”. Moncton’s largest homeless shelter is reducing its number of beds as it switches its focus to helping people find homes, rather than responding to crises and emergencies. The House of Nazareth it now calling itself a “resource centre” for the homeless. After the shelter opened in 2019 with 120 beds, it started receiving complaints from neighbours about crime and open drug use — and an audit found problems with the shelter’s policies and financial management..As a result, the City of Moncton has been withholding thousands of dollars in funding since 2021.
