On Friday, the City of Dieppe announced the passing of city firefighter Captain Rheal Leger, of the Dieppe Fire Department. Captain Leger passed away on Thursday, January 5th, from what the city release referred to as “work related illness” at the age of 57 years old. Captain Leger began his career as a volunteer firefighter in 1984, earned a permanent position as a firefighter and emergency medical technician in 1987, and was promoted to Captain in 2014. In 2000, Leger was recognized as Canadian firefighter of the year and received a medal of bravery for saving a mother and her two children during a flood while off duty. Fire Chief Marc Cormier said that Cormier’s passing is a great loss to the department…and the community.
Mayor Yvon Lapierre announced that “The flags at City Hall and two fire stations will be flown at half-mast in honour of Captain Leger.” At a later date, a commemorative ceremony will be held by the municipality, in accordance with the protocol established by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, as well as the wishes of Captain Leger and his family. Details to be announced later.

An independent research group says that New Brunswick has the worst score in what it calls the “covid hazard index” in the country. Our province scores more than two points higher than the national average for last week’s data. The group tells the CBC that means that deaths in New Brunswick are roughly 10 to 11 per cent higher than they would be without COVID-19. A spokesperson says that they rate those results as “severe”, and they also say that according to their estimates, one out of every 47 NBers is currently infected. Public health reported 18 deaths from Covid over a two week period in it’s latest release last Wednesday. A 34-year-old Moncton man is facing multiple charges after a drug bust in the City last week. Codiac Regional R-C-M-P say they executed a search warrant at a residence on Pacific Avenue in Moncton on Thursday. The Mounties say they seized drugs believed to be cocaine and methamphetamine during the search, as well as cash and weapons including a loaded handgun. Police say the man has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Moncton Provincial Court in May.

A request to perform a Hindu prayer at the beginning of a sitting was rejected, bringing fresh scrutiny to the practice of saying a daily Christian prayer.https://t.co/b6md1ZlI4P
— Global New Brunswick (@Global_NB) January 6, 2023
The New Brunswick legislature apparently rejected a request for a reading of a Hindu prayer at the opening of an upcoming sitting. Rajan Zed, said in a news release he has delivered a Hindu prayer at state assemblies and city councils around the United States, and made the offer to deliver the prayer. Zed said Speaker Bill Oliver and legislature clerk Shayne Davies turned him down, saying that only a Christian prayer is said before sittings. Zed, president of the universal society of Hinduism, says in his release that imposing one form of prayer doesn’t “speak well of a democratic society.”

—
Town of Riverview: The Town will again offer its free Christmas tree pick-up alongside regular garbage collection. During the week of January 9, 2023, place your natural tree curbside on your regular pick-up day for collection. Please ensure that all decorations, tinsel and lights are removed from the tree. (Due to demand, your tree may be collected a few days after your regular waste pick-up day.)
Meanwhile, as we now officially enter the winter months, Town officials request that residents place garbage bags a few feet from the end of their driveways, not atop snow banks. If not possible, please reduce the size of your snow bank before placing bags to reduce the risk of injury for both residents and waste collectors. Please keep in mind the winter parking ban which prohibits parking on Town streets from midnight to 7 a.m. until March 31.
ICYMI: The provincial government has launched a survey to get people’s thoughts on the proposed changes to the French Immersion system coming to Anglophone schools next Fall.
