The Moncton Fire Department is investigating that fire on Mountain Road yesterday. Platoon chief Mike Wake tells the Times & Transcript that it damaged a retail store and apartments on Mountain Road early Tuesday morning. Wake said firefighters were called to the Pleasures & Treasures store at the corner of Mountain & Walsh at around 5:15 a.m. Wake said only one person was there at the time and she was able to get out unharmed. The building was extensively damaged, and that stretch of Mountain between MacBeath & West Lane was closed to traffic for several hours.

Group warns 240 teachers needed for new French program https://t.co/QMVzruEAJg pic.twitter.com/YtaCmFo228
— Telegraph-Journal (@TJProvincial) January 3, 2023
The head of the Canadian Parents for French in New Brunswick says that the new French language program that the province is planning to launch in the Fall needs a lot more teachers to work. Chris Collins of Moncton says that “at least” 240 more French language teachers are going to be needed…but the province says that only about 60 new teachers will be required as the new program rolls out for Kindergarten & Grade one students next September. Collins says that’s only 15 teachers per district to roll out an entirely new program…and that’s not nearly enough.
Meanwhile…Liberal Leader Susan Holt has pledged to bring some form of immersion back if her party wins next year’s provincial election. Holt told reporters yesterday that she wouldn’t promise exactly what that would look like, but would like parents to have a choice. More: https://tj.news/telegraph-journal/102039894.
City of Dieppe: This year’s real Christmas tree pickup will be on Wednesday, January 11th! Details: www.dieppe.ca/garbage.

Town of Riverview Christmas Tree Pick Up Info: During the week of January 9, 2023, place your natural tree curbside on your regular pick-up day for collection. Please ensure that all decorations, tinsel and lights are removed from the tree. (Due to demand, your tree may be collected a few days after your regular waste pick-up day.) Meanwhile, as we now officially enter the winter months, Town officials request that residents place garbage bags a few feet from the end of their driveways, not on top of snow banks. If not possible, please reduce the size of your snow bank before placing bags to reduce the risk of injury for both residents and waste collectors. Please keep in mind the winter parking ban which prohibits parking on Town streets from midnight to 7 a.m. until March 31.

‘He’s one lucky kid’: N.B. boy uses sweet sign to nab hockey souvenirs at World Juniors https://t.co/rSX54Plelx
— CTV Atlantic (@CTVAtlantic) January 4, 2023
Great story out of the World Juniors about 12 yr old Carter Buck from Hillsborough who went all the games with a sign with a bunch of chocolate bars taped to it that said “I’ll trade you a chocolate bar for a puck or two for a stick.” He got five sticks — three of them goalie sticks — eight pucks, a referee’s whistle, & dozens of signatures! GENIUS!
