The worst flooding in more than 80 years has significant parts of the Saint John river basin underwater this morning with conditions only getting worse…water levels are expected to continue rising for at least 4 more days.
Premier Brian Gallant announced Thursday, the province has enlisted the help of the Canadian Coast Guard to aid in flood relief efforts. He’s also warning residents under evacuation orders to get out while they still can.
In Saint John few people seem to be heeding the warning. Only 116 people of the estimated 1,900 residents from the recommended evacuation areas have registered with the Canadian Red Cross as evacuees, officials said.
A reminder that the TCH Route 2 detour remains in place this morning…westbound traffic heading for Fredericton will be detoured at River Glade and eastbound traffic going to Moncton gets detoured at Oromocto. You basically have to go to Saint John first if you’re heading in either direction…it makes for about a two hour and fifty minute trip. So far More than 140 provincial roads, bridges and culverts have been affected by flooding, including 81 road closures.

The Times & Transcript says that work that CN has been doing on the Subway Overpass on Main Street is actually preparation for a $400,000 facelift! (btw there might still be slowdowns on Main Street between Foundry and Bonaccord today because of that work) Kevin Silliker from the City says that the area around the Subway is getting landscaped and the overpass itself is going to get painted ORANGE! That work is starting later this month.
A Moncton man is walking across the country to raise money and awareness of the work that the World Vision humanitarian assistance organization does. Retired teacher Rodney Blyth started his walk on Monday by dipping his foot into Halifax Harbour…and is planning on reaching BC by October. His goal is to raise $60,000 for World Vision and their work with more than 250 million children around the world who live in conflict zones. Tonight he’s going to be speaking about his journey in Amherst at the 1st Baptist Church at 7pm. He’s hoping to walk through Greater Moncton this weekend.
