Emergency officials say that the man who was floating down the Petitcodiac during rush hour yesterday morning is lucky to be alive. Apperently the man, in his 40’s, was able to get off the piece of ice when it hit the riverbank in the Dieppe area and first responders were able to convince him to get treated by paramedics and go to the hospital. He was released yesterday afternoon. He was originally spotted in the river about 7:15 am and Division chief Marc Cormier of the Dieppe Fire Department told the CBC that the guy refused the ropes that were being tossed to him and they couldn’t get a boat in the river because of the high icebanks…so they actually called in the coast guard and fishermen from Alma were heading up to help! I guess the guy isn’t saying why he was in the river in the first place.
Hunting and fishing retail giant Cabela’s is closing it’s Moncton store. Staff were sent home yesterday and shoppers were turned away. Last year Cabela’s was bought out by rival outdoor chain Bass Pro Shops and the company didn’t see the need to operate two locations in the area. They say that “most” of the 25 full time people have been offered jobs at Bass Pro in Dieppe or at a new Cabela’s in the Halifax area set to open this Spring. No word on if the street, which is off Mapleton, will still be called “Cabela’s Court”…
