House speaker and Moncton Centre MLA Chris Collins has been suspended from the provincial liberal caucus over allegations of harrassment. Fire chief Eric Arsenault says that residents are not being put in danger by a temporary Moncton North West fire station closure. Arsenault tells the Times & Transcript that the Hildegard Fire Station will be closed during the day shift for five weeks while firefighters complete a course. He says this “happens all the time” and it’s one of the ways they keep up on their training and avoid costly overtime. During the closure the Hildegard area will be covered by the Brandon Street crew. In the event of a serious fire or other emergency though, those firefighters who are training will also respond. A former deputy chief Earl Killam tells the Times & Transcript that he thinks it’s dangerous and that the station shouldn’t be closed at all…he said “it doesn’t make sense”.

Moncton councillor Shawn Crossman is asking for a clause saying the city of Moncton should give preference to local businesses in the contracts it signs with the private sector. Crossman believes local bids should receive favour based on their contribution to the city. The request comes after the city dropped insurance provider Medavie Blue Cross for SunLife, SSQ and Green Shield. The change in providers will save the city about $600,000 annually.

What a difference a couple of weeks make. NB Power has backed off on rate increases that would have had the average customer paying 4 dollars a month more. A new request by the utility filed with the Energy and Utilities Board is asking for an increase that averages $2.68 a month, instead. A settlement with insurers over the disasterous refurbishment of Point Lepreau, in 2009, has resulted in a influx of cash for the utility, making the larger increases unnecessary.
